3 Thanksgiving Foods to Help Improve Your Vision
- Posted on: Nov 15 2016
The word “Thanksgiving” is enough to either get your heart racing with anxiety regarding cooking for your entire family or to get your mouth salivating on command. Filled with foods that are packed with flavor, fat, and deliciousness, Thanksgiving is a holiday that never disappoints. And although foods like marshmallow packed sweet potato casserole aren’t exactly healthy for you, there are some other foods that can actual help to strengthen your eye health. Read on to learn more about what you should pack your plate with this Thanksgiving.
1.Carrots
You’ve probably heard it your entire life, “Carrots are good for your health.” And although you may think that this was simply a ruse your parents used in order to get you to eat your vegetables, carrots are actually really good for your eyes. Filled with beta-carotene, carrots work to shield your cornea from damage and strengthen your vision overall. So, if carrots aren’t already on your Thanksgiving menu, consider adding them just for the strength of your vision.
2. Leafy Greens
Whether you add them to your stuffing or you make a salad jam packed with them, leafy greens are another food that is not only heart healthy, but that will help your vision as well. Filled with nutrients like lutein and zeaxanthin, leafy greens like collard greens, spinach, and kale work to protect your eyes from developing macular degeneration and cataracts.
3. Whole Wheat Bread
Nothing will help you sop up your Thanksgiving leftovers quite like a homemade bread roll. However, instead of using your traditional white flour bread roll this thanksgiving, consider switching it to a whole wheat one. Containing vitamin E, zinc, and niacin, foods enriched in whole wheat will help to protect your eyes from developing macular degeneration.
Although Thanksgiving is a time to sit back and enjoy food and your family, it can also be a time to embrace the healthy foods around you. By introducing your family to eye-healthy foods like carrots, leafy greens, and whole wheat bread this Thanksgiving, you can help to encourage healthy eyesight all around.
