Do you Really need to see an Ophthalmologist?

Eyesight is a precious commodity. Unless you struggle routinely with visual disturbances or eye conditions that create discomfort, chance is you give very little thought to the value of being able to see well. What do you do, though, if you just want to get a head start on managing the health of your eyes? Do you even need to see an eye doctor if your eyesight is fine? And if you do, who do you see, an optometrist or an ophthalmologist? We’re about to break it down for you.
The Optometrist
This Doctor of Optometry is the professional that is typically involved in performing routine eye exams. During this process, vision is checked, basic eye pressure is assessed and, if you choose dilation, the structures of the eye are examined. The routine exam covers all the basis that may alert you to increased ocular pressure or the need for eyeglasses or contact lenses.
To perform these services, the optometrist must complete a total of 8-years of education. After an initial undergraduate program that is completed over a four-year period, there are an additional four years of optometric training to receive the doctoral degree (OD).
The Ophthalmologist
Ophthalmology involves undergraduate education, as well as medical school. After receiving the MD, an ophthalmologist undergoes an additional 4 years of hospital training (internship and residency). The extensive educational background enables an ophthalmologist to perform comprehensive eye exams, some of which may involve dilation and sophisticated imaging. An ophthalmologist has a wider range of treatment options for eye conditions, and the ability to manage potentially serious eye diseases such as glaucoma and retinopathy. Additionally, laser eye services are within the realm of the licensed ophthalmologist.
